Male student takes his own life in Makira

0

Kira Kira Police of the Makira Ulawa Provincial Headquarters says its crime investigators are investigating a report that a male student from Nuku Kaisi in the Makirima Area of West Bauro, Central Makira had taken his own life.

PPC Peter Sitai said his crime investigators who have been to the scene have yet to find evidence as to whether or not the student, whose name has not been revealed, may have died as a result of suicide.

He said what the crime investigators had been told so far is the student had a rope around his neck when his body was found between 1pm and 2pm of June 1, 2021.

Mr Sitai adds his crime investigators had discovered the young Tikopian male student had a failed relationship with a girl.

But he said investigations into the boy’s death are continuing, and he appeals to those with information on the fatal incident to report them to the CID Office in Kira Kira Police Headquarters.

PM ENDS FAR EAST TOUR

PM Sogavare surrounded by the Happy Children of Tikopia

Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare and his delegation arrived back in the Temotu Provincial Capital Lata on Friday, after spending almost two days visiting Chiefs, community leaders, schools and clinics at Tikopia, Temotu’s remote island.

This is part of the Prime Minister’s weeklong engagement with the Provincial Government and people of the country’s most eastern Province.

The trip started Monday 7 June when the Prime Minister left Honiara as guest of honour at the Temotu Provincial Second Appointed Day celebrations on 8 June.

His delegation left Lata for Tikopia just before Tuesday midnight.

After about 16 long hours braving high swells and strong winds, Prime Minister Manasseh and Madame Sogavare, Government Ministers and the Temotu Provincial Premier arrived at Safoa Community High School, Tikopia.

The arrival welcome at Safoa was overwhelming.

Prime Minister Sogavare was accorded a real traditional warriors welcome and attire.

Welcoming Prime Minister Sogavare on behalf of the Chiefs and people of Tikopia, an emotional Mathew Vaka Apairotu said, “some, if not all of us here never had the chance to meet any Prime Minister in our lifetime let alone hearing it from the radio. Today, not anymore, the people of Tikopia meet you in person.”

He said, the former Governor General, the late Sir George Lepping visited them some 27 years ago and that was it.

Mr Apairotu on behalf of the Chiefs and people of Tikopia thanked the Prime Minister for coming out all the way to them.

The Chief’s representative also thanked the Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement, DCGA, for steering the country safely in this pandemic. Adding, the people of Tikopia owe their health especially in this pandemic to the wise decisions of the government resulting in the current COVID 19 free status.

He said, the visit brings the government closer to the people on Tikopia.

“It reinforces national unity, that we are one family, a Solomon Islands family.”

Reciprocating the welcome, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare was overwhelmed that he can personally meet the Chiefs and people of Tikopia, listen to their challenges, visit schools and a clinic on the Islands, without having to wait in the office for the reports.

The Prime Minister also thanked the Chiefs and leaders of Tikopia especially for its human resource contribution in the development of Solomon Islands.

He assured the chiefs and people of Tikopia that their plea for improved health services is not ignored. A new Health facility will soon be built with Government assistance.

In Education, the Prime Minister said, while it is welcome news to hear that Government support through the constituency especially in classroom buildings was strongly evident, Government wants to pursue the idea of a modern Library built for the students on the island of Tikopia.

The Prime Minister also applaud Tikopian leaders for upholding the island’s rich and unique culture of respect. He said, while norms and culture continues to break down in most parts of the country, it is encouraging to feel, breath and experience the highest form of respect on the Island.

The Prime Minister also handed over token of appreciation in cash to community leaders on behalf of their communities.

Prime Minister Sogavare and delegation also visited Tukutaunga Rural Health Clinic and provided logistic support for the clinic’s medical supplies.

Terano Primary School at Ravenga district was also visited. Students of the school treated the Prime Minister and his delegation to some of the unique traditional Tikopian dance.

The Prime Minister acknowledged the school’s administration, past and present for raising some of the country’s best human resources both in private and public sectors.

The Prime Minister further donated 20 Thousand dollars as a token of appreciation towards Terano Primary School.

Prime Minister Manasseh arrived back in Lata on Friday, onboard Patrol Boat Gizo.

The Prime Minister was expected to spend Sabbath with church members in Lata yesterday (Saturday 12 June).

Mr Sogavare is due back in Honiara today.

Puna warns PIF countries on accessing loans

PIF Secretary General, Henry Puna

BY BEN BILUA
Gizo

SECRETARY General of the Pacific Islands Forum has called on member countries to be wary of loans as COVID-19 continues to stretch Pacific Island’s economic base.

Speaking during the Pacific Small Island Developing States (PSIDS) Access to Finance Dialogue last week, Henry Puna said understanding the types of loans available is very important during this time of COVID-19 crisis.

He also urged development partners to rethink and develop new innovative financing option so as solution that not only meet the immediate needs of recovery, but also supports longer-lasting economic systems, that are sustainable for Pacific SIDS.

Commenting on the current situation, Puna said the impact of COVID-19 to respective economy in the Pacific is evident and projection has it that Small Island Developing States, will suffer more than other Developing States.

“This is a critical time for our Blue Pacific region, and indeed for our Blue Planet, and SIDS timely access to finance is therefore absolutely crucial.

“The question has to be asked is, are the international financial instruments available to us as SIDS, sufficient to meet our needs in unprecedented situations such as this? If not, why not? What can be done to improve this?

“I would offer that, the rigidity of our international financial systems, call into question their relevance and responsiveness, to the specific circumstances of SIDS, in emergency situations such as this.

“Furthermore, I would also offer that we, as a region, must continue to encourage and call, for the revision of traditional financing criteria, to take into account our vulnerability to climate change and natural disasters, as Pacific SIDS.

“Further, we should also encourage the review of funding disbursement mechanisms. Often, access to financing is hindered by burdensome requirements and demands, on our national financial systems, which are often unrealistic given our small administrative capacities, and the context within which Pacific SIDS operate,” he said.

DMP’s GLOBAL ENTRY

DMP performing in Australia during their 2019 tour

BY PETER ZOLEVEKE II

“Iu minim kaen type ia,” expressed Doorman Project’s (DMP) lead vocals and ragamuffin David Fafale or known better by stage name ‘Evin Rush’ quoting from the band’s initial hit song back in the early 2000s.

The four-man boy band reached the peak of their musical career, dominating the top spots in the international online music platform Djooky during its recent spring season – creating a history in the global music competition.

“It was through our passion and commitment creating and making music we reached this far, ‘iu minim! Rush jokingly said.

“The boys would like to thank the fans and families who have been supporting us since day one, and we promise to keep making music.

Fafale continued that it’s time for the national government to also recognize the achievement of musicians in the country.

Djooky spring season standings

“There should be a national initiative to assist local musicians because we are ambassadors to the world of music,” Fafale said.

DMP won for the Best Reggae song in both the season’s competition and MOSSA (Mostyn Hani) won the BEST Afro Beat and Blood P2A in 8th spot.

“This was the second time we made it to the continental finals,” DMP’s band manager and promoter Australian DJ Victor Lopez told Weekend Sun.

“This is the world’s biggest online song contest – we didn’t win the main prize but we came close too close,” DJ Lopez expressed.

DMP comprised of solo artists Blad P2A and MOSSA also fashioned into the global scene respectively.

“This season the boys made it to the Top 18 finalists,” DJ Lopez emphasized.

The band competed in the national round where the top 3 bands will have to secure their spot in the Oceania Continental round against top bands in Australia and Papua New Guinea.

DMP’s band manager and promoter DJ Victor Lopez

“Now all three from the Solomon Islands have made it into the top continental round going head-to-head with top 3 bands in Africa, Asia, North America, Europe and South America.

Djooky music domination covers over 129 countries and engaged over 2369 nominations – which prompted DJ Lopez to call for public support towards the band’s campaign through online voting in the next season which is in three months.

“We wanted to get the people in the Solomon Islands to know and support by voting us.

“Solomon Islands were the only country to have all three in the finals, first in the history of the competition for 3 artists from the same country.

“I was the only one promoting this that’s why I’m asking for help for the next season so I can get these boys and Solomon music to the world,” DJ Lopez said.

He admitted that luck of support in the latest season the boys lost to Philippines artist who has signed with Sony music.

“The Philippine artist was like their Justine Bieber, so the whole country voted for him but we came close to beating him and I’m proud of the guys,” says DJ Lopez.

Djooky Co-founderBrian Malouf shared with the Australian Channel 9 News the incentives behind the music streaming podium.

“Djooky is a music streaming platform, people from all over the world small corners of the world that needed their voice to get their music out there, their music heard first by a small group of people and then by eventually expanding,” Malouf stated.

“This spring season second and third place winners are from a place called the Solomon Islands, I don’t know if any band there has already gone worldwide from that country, but DMP have reached their pinnacle at the Djooky platform and hopefully that can be a springboard for them to go further.

Malouf is an American producer, engineer, and mixer who has worked with acts such as Michael Jackson, Queen, Madonna, Pearl Jam and Stevie Wonder to name a few.

Meanwhile, DMP has recently signed with the biggest independent reggae label ‘ineffable records’ out in Los Angeles, United States of America (USA) and is due to release their first single from the new album.

Ineffable Records just released the ‘Cali Roots Riddim 2021’ project which includes our new single ‘Everybody Waiting’ produced by Collie Buddz and Johnny Cosmic from Stick Figure. The project consists of 27 versions from the best reggae artists in the world including Alborosie, Anthony B, Konshens, Kabaka Pyramid, Kolohe Kai, Demarco & Turbulence.

DEO HITS BACK AGAIN

Dr Deo Harorimana

Allegations lacked substance and reason

By EDDIE OSIFELO

EMBATTLED foreign consultant Dr Deogratias Harorimana has dismissed allegations levelled against his company AIPF SI Ltd in recent days.

Some clients who had sought assistance from Harorimana (Deo) to revive their businesses have accused him of money laundering and breaching banking regulations in the country.

Former Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Commerce, Industry, Labour and Immigration, George Kosui is helping the “victims”, mostly local business people allegedly duped by Deo into signing loan commitments and business agreements that have left their businesses on the brink of collapsing.

Allegations raised against Deo include:

  1. the company’s shareholdings;
  2. private residence at Panatina believed to be sold to Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare;
  3. incomplete CT scan project at National Referral Hospital;
  4. company’s mortgage to help clients;
  5. 4 percent commissions and service fees;
  6. Honiara Refrigeration and Air Condition saga; and
  7. His core critics on social media and print media.

Deo stated all these allegations lacked substance and reason.

Here, he responded to each of the allegations:

  1. It was claimed AIPF holds multiple joint ventures based on the title value. At the present moment and in the past, AIPF have not had any Joint Ventures based on title Co-Ownership in Solomon Islands.
  2. It was alleged our private residence is owned or was purchased by the current Prime Minister, Manasseh Sogavare. This is not true. It has never been purchased by Prime Minister Sogavare. The right place to check is Land register not kava houses and security of the residents as put down by Sasako in the Solomon Star. Also, among the clients claimed victims – is East Bauro Enterprises. AIPF has never dealt with such a client or its owners.  We do not know who this is. INo client of AIPF (past or present) has that name.
  3. It was alleged the CT scan is failed project.  CT Scan project was due to complete in May 2021 and the contractor is Hatanga not AIPF SI. Budgetary matters are Ministry of Health and Medical Services to clarify but all the arguments run in the paper are simply false.  Our experience is based on several completed projects among them, Mokolo, TR Heights, Telekom TH4 Ranadi roundabout and many others. These are all projects managed by AIPF with great results. These projects have lifted the image of Honiara and we will objectively continue to work to inspire and support all desirous Solomon Islanders to help them access to finance. Where more work is still needed, is ongoing capacity development to manage long term strategic growth and cash flows.
  4. It was alleged that we pay for approvals for banks to grant offers.  This is Big No. We have never done and would not. The public should keep in mind that banks lend their money at much greater risks. Like you, they do not lend who they know, they invest for business- a business that they assess in financial terms, we say, – they underwrite their risks. Our Job is to guide our clients in the complex lending stages. Including coordinating the various specialists who are commissioned by the clients to produce various reports. In most instances, we do help our clients to meet upfront costs for Valuers, accountants, land rentals, building insurances, design of the building plans& approvals, etc.  These costs can be expensive (and they constitute one major barrier to accessing finance for most Solomon Islanders). When we do this, it is a business risks which must be mitigated. A contract is therefore a must have to make sure clients understood the seriousness of their commitment. We do not rush into contracts. Indigenous Solomon Islanders do struggle to access financing and this is the market gap for our private sector. The complex banking requirements also require competent individuals and our work is not free. By the way, we never sign a single document to the bank on behalf of the client.  Our client knows this. No single instruction come from AIPF to an individual client.
  5. With a week in media, I still, I do not understand what our critiques do not like? (a) Is it that we help indigenous people to access funding with low interest rates compared to others? Or (b) Is it that we also make money as a private business (a) or is it that locals we help are struggling to meet bank repayments (just as everyone is affected by Covid-19)? If this is the case, how does that become AIPF problem? What is their problem? Even our fees are the lowest in the market compared to our competitors in project management and building businesses. Better and lower than everyone. For those who do not know, it is a common practice for professionals to charge in % forms. It is a universally agreed way of the capital finance and proposal development. Nothing fishy here.
  6. Clarification about HRAC: The issue of Honiara Refrigeration is well structured commercial transaction based on business assets and liabilities not just the land (which had less than a year left on its lifetime to expire).  The contract (for which stamp duty was also paid) had been discussed and settled months before it was signed. It was witnessed by one Son representing the other family members (we were told); and a friend and a retired police officer. It had been achieved after lengthy discussions and assessment over 2-3 months between parties. The owner (as per company house records, we consulted) show her as the only one sole owner since 1990s up until recently 2020 a year after purchase and only after the site has been developed. Anyone who bother checking, you cannot add a shareholder who has died (no consent can be obtained from a dead person). Their advisor/Lawyer, Gary Fa’aitoa, should have known better that one cannot falsify historical records to defeat an already signed contract.

Deo said HRAC, which was already taken over through the contract (witnessed and stamp duty paid), stands challenged by ill-informed people, who have selfish motives.

“Again, delaying development that we are championing to change Honiara and develop this country.

“How can that be right? Again, this is not how the business is done, contracts are important avenue to ensure parties stay true to their commitments,” he said.

Deo said the national government should really look at how to actively work to reduce the current hostility towards the private sector and “improve the doing business standing”.

“We say this because from our experience now, AIPF stands as a victim of harassment, libel and character defamation by those who owe us money, lost in the high courts of this land, and, in some cases, are trying to walk away from their formalized commitments,” he said.

Further to that, Deo has criticized his staunch critics who are busy in social media and newspapers to attack his company and business dealings:

a)   George Kosui, initiator; a person who was fired from the Central bank for (it is said) fraud activities. Fired from government, for corruption and abuse of government assets. An agent of a client who has lost the high court case in November 2020 and should simply focus on negotiating how to pay what is owed.

b)   The client in Naha (aka Robert Leeson) in the social media: AIPF paid for his mortgage (using AIPF own funds) to rescue their family homes in Naha from being reposted by Pan Oceanic Bank (POB). AIPF paid for their two-building insurance, 9-year land rental and, helped him and his wife to refurbish the house so as to turn around their sinking ship. Without AIPF and Dr Deo’s money, by now they would have no home. The mortgagee in possession was ready to sell. AiPF spent on him over 128k to help this family. After the refinance, AIPF received some of its loaned money refunded. Their fees had even been reduced to 2% to help them.  A refurbishment funding was applied for and secured. The client, without much involvement of AIPF, entered into a bidding contract (drafted by himself). He employed a local company (JNS owned by Salome). Salome and her local boys completed their job as per contract. After it was all done, this client took the keys, and moved in his house since October, 2019- still owing the full payment. He had the money in his account, but he misused it. This client has not paid even a dollar to JNS! Not for Labour, not for material, everything. He failed to honour the contract in place. He is now out there acting as one of the victims. Contacting every past client, he got to know and try to recruit them. Fortunately, many of our clients have rebuffed them and called to informed us. This person has an interesting past.

c)   Joyce Konofilia, a well-known critique of every successful Solomon Islander and recently attempted to bring down one of the upcoming leaders- MISS Solomon, Gladys Habu for fishy reasons. She has never been a client of AIPF. Yet she has called every client, posing as one of them. She has trolled our movements, search clients contacts and share information. Make up scrupulous theories- which hold no water. And her only objective in her word “Take Salome down”- for what may I ask? I know it is a democracy, but this practice of freedom of speech is now new to me.

Deo said there is a pattern here.

He said these individuals are supposedly been all educated.

“This country has spent so much money to educate them to be professionals, to help the development.

“Instead, they have veered off the road.  They hold no career. No job. No business.

“They spend the day on social media. Their frustration is now showing through baseless attacks to the government leaders, to the private sector leaders of this country and every successful woman entrepreneur.  A sad outcome indeed,” he said.

Deo said those misleading the public should be reminded that they are not a public company.

“We welcome robust debates, critiques, because they make us better. We can learn from it, and we can improve.

“However, there are limits to debate and freedom of speech,” he said.

“Going into finding residential of a private person, checking their clients seeking illegal access to information from accounts, and private person’s lawyers, commenting carelessly on social media about private life matters, and many other criminal things are not welcome debate.

“They are what they are, criminal activities.

“We as a private company we reserve the right to take to court everyone making unfounded allegations both in social media and in the prints as well as those going around revealing privileged business information,” he said.

Furthermore, Deo said: “We cannot end this rebuke without thanking our clients and friends who have stood up to these opportunists.

“We are happy to see clients who have been subjected to unwelcome recruitments have stood their grounds and refused to be drawn into conspiracies and selfish motives claims.

“It is sad that newspapers are not asking hard facts to these so-called investigators.  They should in the interest of the newspaper readers.

“We want to assure the public that AIPF SI remain committed to serving our clients with the most competitive and professional services.

Island Sun understands the victims have reported their cases to Central Bank of Solomon Islands, Solomon Islands Financial Intelligence Unit, Ministry of Commerce, Inland Revenue Division and Police for investigation into Deo’s dealings.

Guale, Temotu discuss possible sister relationship

TPG Deputy Premier: Hon. Nickson Lanoli; GP Deputy Premier: Hon. Lazarus Rina; TPG Minister of Home Affairs: Hon. Nicholus Luwi

DEPUTY Premiers of Guadalcanal and Temotu provinces have met to initiate discussions towards establishing sister relations between the two provinces.

Deputy Premier of Guadalcanal, Lazarus Rina and his Temotu counterpart, Nickson Lanoli met during celebrations marking the Temotu Provincial day last week in Lata.

Both leaders agree that any sister relations must benefit both provinces.

Both identified areas that may be considered in the sister relation, including but not limited to food security, trading and investments, resettlements and human resources.

On Human resources, the Guadalcanal leader explained that more than 30% of the workforce in Guadalcanal Plains Oil Palm Limited (GPPOL) comes from Temotu Province.

He said this is a great contribution from Temotu in the development of Guadalcanal province.

“In fact, this is not new as this workforce recruitment has always been there since CDC was here,” he explained.

In response, the Deputy Premier of Temotu Province expressed gratitude for keeping and offering employment opportunity to the people of his province.

He said this only explained the lack of development in the province to retain them.

“If they had been misbehaving while living and working in your province, I offer my deepest apology on their behalf to the government and people of Guadalcanal Province for behaving that way in Guadalcanal province” he said.

He further states that the initiation of this sister relation will help allow the two provinces consider sharing of benefits back to the originating province of the workforce for development enhancement.

Deputy Premier of Guadalcanal Province also expressed his happiness to have reached Lata in Temotu Province.

He said, he has never been to Lata in the past and his attendance at the 38th Second Appointed Day of the province gave a new perspective in the development of the provinces in the country.

He said in all the provinces he went to, they have no open park like Lata, it is so beautiful and would not mind relocating to Lata with a smile.

He said this is a model province in its physical development, a challenge he will want to bring back to his executive in the establishment of their new headquarter at Mamara.

In saying this he is making an open invitation to the Deputy Premier of Temotu Province to come to Guadalcanal Province Second appointed day celebration in August 2021 in which the Deputy Premier of Temotu Province have already accepted.

Government plans Ghozoruru kick-off early next year

Isabel Leaders presenting gifts to the Prime Minister Sogavare

BY JENNIFER KUSAPA

THE Democratic Coalition Government for Advancement has promised the people of Isabel that the Ghozoruru project will be up and running early next year.

In his recent visit to the Provincial Head Quarter in Buala, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare said since the Commodities Export Marketing Authority CEMA was revitalized and recapitalized, Isabel province will benefit from the program.

He said CEMA at the end of the year will at least start to buy copra and cocoa from at least four of its buying centers around the country and will be rolling out on three stages.

“I trust that the people of this great province will work closely with CEMA to help build our province and lift the standard of living of our people”, Sogavare said.

He said the government has supported a lot of Kava farmers from Isabel, as a result, production of kava has increased from nine tons in 2019 to 17.4 tons in 2020 despite the global pandemic.

“This has resulted in exports earning revenue for our country”, Sogavare said.
