Youths from Malaita Province visited the Goshen Enterprise pack house at Adaliua, Central Kwara’ae, on Monday, 16, March.
The visit is part of their six-week programme that aims to broaden individual mindsets and give them an opportunity to understand what real work in the field entails, as well as to see how processes and machines perform their tasks.
Malaita Provincial Youth Coordinator, Frank Samo Sari, said their visit was enjoyable and the youth learned a lot of new things.
He said the most attractive aspect for the youths was how the taro machines transformed local taro into a marketable product.
“Yes, the youth members enjoyed and learned a lot of new things during our visit.
“The most interesting thing they wanted to know more about was how the machines turn our local products, like agricultural resources, into marketable products,” he said.
He said that seeing the machines, processes, and products was an eye-opener for many of the youth members who were there for the first time.
A female youth, Anne Tanai said they gained a lot of new knowledge and skills during their visit.
She said they enjoyed the time they spent learning more about the processes and procedures at the pack house.
She also said the government should provide such machines at the Goshen pack house to rural communities as this would provide opportunities for unemployed youth to focus on and avoid social activities like drinking alcohol and using drugs.
The program will take six weeks and is expected to play a significant role in empowering Malaita’s youths and creating more opportunities for their future.
The program is funded by the European Union, facilitated by Plan International, and implemented by the National Youth Congress and the Malaita Provincial Youth Division Office.
