A youth member participating in a six-week programme in Auki, Malaita Province, calls on the government to prioritise and focus on activities that can create opportunities to engage youths.
Anna Tanai during an interview with Island Sun Auki said this is the only way forward to prevent young people from engaging in anti-social activities like consumption of alcohol and drug use.
Speaking to the paper after they visited the Goshen Enterprise Packhouse at Adaliua, she said once government shifts focus and provides activities like those offered by Goshen Enterprise, it will engage young people in rural communities.
“We have seen many things during our first-day visit to the Adaliua packhouse.
“During our first visit on Monday, we saw and learned many new things. Especially regarding the taro machines, they are simple and easy to handle, which means that any rural community can operate them.
“We enjoyed seeing how the machines do their job.
“So, I call on the provincial and national governments to reconsider this and shift your focus to the prioritise needs of young people,” she said.
This week, the youths will continue to learn and experience taro processing.
Managing Director of Goshen Enterprise, Levite Luciano Maesimae, provided explanations of each operation to the youths.
The programme is funded by the European Union, facilitated by Plan International, and implemented by the National Youth Congress and the Malaita Provincial Youth Division Office.
