The rural community of Tiaro, in West Guadalcanal Constituency is celebrating a major step forward in connectivity, following the successful activation of a new telecommunication tower under a nationwide infrastructure initiative led by China Harbour Engineering Company (CHEC) and Huawei.
Speaking to Island Sun, Christopher Kika, chairman of the Tiaro community project hailed the development as a milestone achievement.
“This is another milestone for development in our community, ward, and also our constituency,”
“We are thankful to the GNUT Government for selecting our community to be part of this progress,” Kika said.
He also commended the dedication and support shown by community members, noting their efforts throughout the early challenges of the tower’s construction.
The Tiaro tower is one of five new sites activated as of July 31, 2025, bringing the total number of operational towers across the Solomon Islands to 40.
These upgrades are part of a broader initiative to enhance reliable communication networks, especially in rural and remote communities.
The impact of improved connectivity is expected to be wide-reaching as farmers will gain real-time access to market prices and agricultural updates.
Health clinics will strengthen emergency responses and healthcare services. Schools in underserved regions will be better equipped with digital learning resources.
Kika also urges the national telecommunications provider to build on this progress by introducing additional services such as M-Seleni and other digital platforms.
These services will ensure communities not only gain access but also actively engage with the opportunities made available through improved connectivity.
This project is part of a growing partnership between the Government of the Solomon Islands and the Government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC), and aims at enhancing communication infrastructure and unlocking economic potential across all provinces.
As momentum builds, further expansions are expected in the coming months, reaffirming the national commitment to digital inclusion, development, and stronger rural communication resilience.
