THE Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) issued an Orange Alert for waters of Western, Makira, Temotu, Rennell/Bellona provinces and the southern waters of Guadalcanal and Russell Islands, warning that strong winds could capsize small boats over the next 24 hours.
Impact Based Warning Number Ninety-Nine was issued at 4pm yesterday, Friday 24th July 2026.
According to the warning, a general southeast to southwest wind flow is affecting the Solomon Islands and winds are expected to reach 15 to 20 knots, increasing to 25 knots over areas covered by the alert.
SIMS said seas will become moderate to rough, with moderate south to southeast swells of 2.5 metres, and warns of poor visibility in shower areas.
The warning was rated as High likelihood with significant impact on the service’s risk matrix, placing it at Medium risk overall.
The corresponding response level was set at “Be Prepared”, one level below the highest “Take Action” category.
SIMS said small boats are likely to capsize in the forecasted conditions and urges sea travellers to consider safety actions, as winds can produce dangerous wave conditions, hazardous to small vessels.
People in the affected areas have been advised to take precautionary measures, as strong winds have the potential to impact lives and property. SIMS noted that this warning be shared with people with disabilities.
The public is also urged to stay informed and prepared, and to listen to SIBC and other media outlets for further updates.
