Ignorance can lead to major problem or disaster

0

DEAR EDITOR, I write the above topic on my article because that’s what used to happen today in many organisations, whether in the Government Sector, Private Sector as well as institutions etc.

Usually, people with high positions and responsible for making decision on behalf of the organisations were sometimes ignorance and can creates problem to the organisations or even to the country as a whole which they somehow wrongly advices and think that they are so smart and know better than others, so they can’t listen to any body when someone was affected and needs fair justice.

Take for an example, the current strike or protest made by the students of SINU should not happen if things works out well with the students at the first place by accepting the student’s presidents and his committee dealing with the welfares of the students.

But it is because of continues ignorance’s by the school administration and management for having dialogue and round table discussions over the issues that is why students choose to take this action, and that’s the only way or avenue they think it is appropriate for they to take so that the University Management and Government can addressed their outstanding issues at the end of the day.

So ignorance is a serious matter and it’s like a cancer that can kill and can also leads to disaster and major problems.

By now we should learn from our past mistakes the country have gone through, so let’s stop from practising Ignorance but be a responsible person that can solve problem when problem arises.

The issues in which the student have raised to the University Administration and Management is not a new issue.

These   issues had been there for so long, but never been addressed by the University Management despite several attempts had been made by student representative for dialogue and negotiation with the school management but was failed or in other words all their request for dialogue was fell in deaf ear.

Students are our future leaders.

They should not be ignored when dealing with matters regarding their welfares, they should be treated fairly as anybody.

We are all human beings and we need equal justice.

Finally, and again I repeat stop practicing ignorancy, but be a responsible person for problem solving, otherwise everybody has the legal rights under the constitution the supreme law of the country that they must be treated justly and fairly.

Yours sincerely

Women graduates – leadership and management

0

DEAR EDITOR, I read on paper and through online media of women graduating in Leadership and management.

It was impressive to see women to achieve such qualification that will enhance and build confidence in whatever role they will engage on as they are mothers, managers and leaders at home, community and society.

Thank you APTC to provide such prestigious training right to the provincial and community level.

These women face odds to reach their potential, and we as state and a nation have much to lose if they don’t.

If we are going to turn around the outlook for (these) women and our nation we have to get beyond seeing the risks they face and focus on developing their enormous potential.

That means making investments now in programs and services that they are proven performers.

In doing so will significantly decrease the poverty gap and place women on a positive and provide a sizable return on our national public investment.

Let’s ensure that women of today and next women generation of innovation thinkers and contributors have all they need to succeed when they need it the most, congratulations women graduates of management and leadership, you are our leaders and managers.

A round up of recent good news stories

0

DEAR EDITOR, there was no shortage of good news last week and the highlight was captured in the story that weightlifter, Jenly Wini, secured a bronze medal in the Commonwealth Games in Brisbane.

This was the first ever Commonwealth Games medal awarded to the Solomon Islands at a Commonwealth Games event.

34 year old Jenly deserves the congratulations of all on her fine achievement representing her country.

The initiative by the Honiara City Council to allow more local clinics to open late and to give the public more access to doctors during the later hours of the day, I thought an encouraging move and worthy of thanks.

The pilot project started at the Kukum Clinic will now see the seven doctors being available in the Council’s three zones; eastern, central and western.

Relative to the health sector, it was reported that the Togamae Private Emergency Health Clinic, recently opened in Honiara by Dr Pedical Togamae and his brother, is planning to launch an additional Area Health Centre in Isabel Province at Buala.

Dr Pedical is wished well with this proposed venture and it is hope he will get support from the local village communities when it comes to building the centre and from both the national MOHMS (NRH) and the provincial health authority when medical equipment and supplies are needed.

Since 2013m I have been following the good work undertaken by the Natural Resources Development Foundation (NRDF), a Choiseul based non-government organization, funded in part by the EU, Bread for the World, USAID and by the Dutch Millennium Foundation (DMF).

NRDF continues to promote and support sustainable natural resources management by local landowners in turn protecting social, economic and environmental assets, especially the forests.

I was reminded of the NRDF when I read the story of the excellent work being done in Auki by the Kwainamoro forest nursery where last week the nursery began its 2018 tree distribution schedule.

The distribution of Mahogany trees has kicked off already and this programme will be soon followed with giving out Teak and Eucalyptus trees in the next distribution.

The trees are distributed to local farmers and schools.

Excellent conservation work worthy of praise.

Praise too was deserved by SolRice contributed 67 bags of rice to the READ SI programme tutors in 14 locations throughout the provinces where a two week workshop will be held.

Since 2015 SolRice has supported the work of READ SI to get books to the villages where the organisation conducts reading classes and furthers educational development of many, many people.

This year the National Literacy Campaign organised by READ SI is expected to reach 600 villages.

The stories I have recounted are just a few of the many good things that occur in the Solomon Islands every day and which often go without notice or thanks from anyone and often involve kind deeds and charitable acts by individuals or organizations.

As this year the Solomon Islands will celebrate its 40th year of national independence, I would like to suggest that the Solomon Islands Government gives some special attention to recognizing the good deeds of its citizens, especially by those in voluntary service, including so many young people at the forefront of such work, with a Certificate of Appreciation at a national occasion to coincide with Independence Day.

Yours sincerely

Part of SP Oil staff attending the special session of health expo provided by Atoifi hospital.

ATOIFI Hospital has wrapped up its Health Expo and DVD launch in Honiara – part of its fundraising drive in support of the East Kwaio-based Hospital’s patients’ feeding program.

The feeding program began a few years ago with a donation by a Canadian couple. Atoifi Hospital used the C$5,000 (about SBD25,000) to establish the feeding program which is now costing around $50,000 a year to maintain.

A 57-strong troupe, comprising nursing staff, student nurses and other auxiliary staff descended on Honiara about a week ago for the DVD and Health Expo launch in aid of the feeding programme.

Some have since returned to Atoifi.

Those who remained in Honiara conducted a special session of the Health Expo for the staff of SP Oil on Sunday under the guidance of the Atoifi Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer, Dr Jason Diau.

The half-day session was conducted at the Anglican Church’s All Saints Hall in central Honiara. It is not clear whether SP Oil makes a donation to the cause.

This was after some staff who attended the initial Health Expo a week ago recommended that all SP Oil staff attend the program.

The Hospital’s fundraising drive reportedly raised more than $200,000 in cash donations from corporate, church and individuals.

Landing Craft (LC) Gulatata’e – the ship owned by the business arm of East Kwaio Constituency – is said to have topped the donor list with cash donation of $100,000.

The other big cash donors include, Mega ($10,000), Top Timber ($5,000), businessman Hudson Wakio ($5,000), Hon John M Fugui ($2,000) as well as mining company, Bintan Mining (SI) Ltd, which donated foodstuff.

A full list acknowledging the generous contributions towards the patients’ feeding program would appear in the paper later this week.

Meanwhile Dr Diau has thanked everyone for the support towards the patient feeding programme at Atoifi hospital.

“On behalf of the hospital administration, patients and relatives I would like to sincerely thank all the individuals/organisations who have contributed one way or another.

“I will convey all these donations to the Patients and relatives when the whole team is back at Atoifi later this week,” Dr Diau said.

Dr Diau also appealed for similar support to other faith-based hospitals in the country.

“We look forward to working closely with you and our other East Kwaio leaders as we support the health service work at Atoifi,” he said.

BY MAVIS NISHIMURA PODOKOLO

(Left to Right) Calisto Oiofa and Hubert Lovi staffs in charge of the school fees scheme.

A Go-money scheme for school fees was clarified to this paper yesterday by the Value Chain team leader Hubert Lovi.

He revealed that the initiative was set in place due to school fees being regarded as the biggest yearly expense in the Solomon Islands.

Mr Lovi said this creativity was developed to assist parents who are located in rural areas in terms of reducing some of their costs associated with paying of school fees, save time, money and efforts and options of installment paying.

Also there is no need to take time off at work, payment can be done anytime anywhere and prevent late fee payment and lessen the standing queue issue at the banks.

He explained the pilot processes are parents will be issued a unique student ID by school and they will pay via mobile phones.

After that parents are required to enter unique student ID in Invoice number field amounts and complete transaction using MSPIN which means parents dial *269# and select Pay Bill option and from the list of billers parents will be given options to select their school’s name.

“From then Supervisor logs in to internet banking checks account statement referencing unique student ID which will be resulted parents to receive SMS on mobile phone and then he /she will forwards SMS to a pre-designated mobile number of supervisors at school and they ( school) will give the physical receipt to students.

“These processes can be done through using ANZ goMoney which is the mobile banking platform of the ANZ bank,” he said.

Lovi said the programme has been piloted in two of the schools within the capital, King George Sixth School and St Nicholas College, and a dialogue to have it piloted on schools under the Honiara City Council is still underway.

The scheme was designed through the partnership of Australian and New Zealand (ANZ) Bank and the Pacific Financial Inclusion Programme (PFIP).
