The Temotu provincial government has expressed concern over issues of non-compliance with fare payments on the vessel MV Taimareho, which are affecting both its operations and provincial revenue linked to shipping services.
Premier Stanley Tehiahua of Temotu Province said the practice, allegedly carried out by certain individuals, has serious repercussions on provincial revenue and the smooth operation of shipping services, and must be stopped.
Addressing the full assembly on March 18 2026, Premier Tehiahua highlighted that an ongoing issue affecting provincial revenue relates to the collection of passenger levies associated with MV Taimareho, which is owned and operated by the West Are’Are Shipping company.
He said that some passengers have refused to pay their sea fares and this has a significant impact on the vessel’s operations and the revenue arrangements tied to it.
“As a result, the management of the shipping company has expressed hesitation in paying the passenger levy dues owed to the Temotu provincial government, which they are responsible for collecting on behalf of the province,” he explained.
Premier Tehiahua said that such behaviour directly contributes to the loss of much-needed provincial revenue and discourages shipping operators from continuing services to the province.
“Reliable shipping services are critical for our remote communities, and we must ensure that both passengers and service providers respect the systems and agreements in place,” the premier said.
He added that these practices compromise essential shipping operations, which are a vital service for the people of Temotu province.
