The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) has issued an Orange Alert for all waters across the country as strong southeast to southwest winds sweep the region.
Impact-Based Warning Number 105 was released at 4pm yesterday, covering waters from Choiseul and Western Province through Isabel, Central, Guadalcanal, Malaita, Makira/Ulawa, Rennell and Bellona, and out to Temotu provinces.
According to the warning, seas are expected to become moderate to rough with moderate swells, raising the risk that small boats could capsize. Poor visibility is also expected during shower periods.
The Meteorological office service is urging sea travellers to take safety precautions and warns that the wind conditions can produce hazardous waves for small vessels.
Residents and mariners are seriously advised to stay informed and prepared, and to monitor SIBC and other media outlets for further updates.
SIMS said the warning’s risk assessment rates the likelihood of impact as high, with a significant impact level placing it in the “High Risk” category, and calls on people to be prepared.
