Public backlash is mounting against the Parliamentary Entitlements Commission’s (PEC) defense of a 6 percent salary increase for members of Parliament, with much of the criticism centering on a demand for consistency: if the PEC’s own criteria justify a rise for MPs, citizens argue, the same standard — and the same consultation process with the Central Bank and Ministry of Finance — should extend to police, teachers, nurses, and public servants generally, whose wages have stayed stagnant for years.
Some members of the public have questioned why no equivalent independent body exists to review public servants’ pay the way the PEC reviews MPs’, pointing to teachers as the clearest gap.
Underlying the criticism is a broader argument about timing and priority. The public notes that a pay rise for politicians could be defensible in a country with a strong economy and sound public finances — but argue that is not the current reality, with families facing high fuel prices, strained essential services, and ongoing government budget pressure.
In that context, many citizens say frontline public servants should be first in line for improved pay and conditions, not politicians.
Others have pointed to the apparent hypocrisy of a Prime Minister who, as Opposition Leader, condemned the 2024 pay rise as “untimely and insensitive,” yet now benefits from the 2026 increase.
Citizens have also challenged the PEC’s own reasoning on its merits, arguing its three stated factors — affordability, sustainability, and reasonableness — remain unproven given current economic conditions, and that entitlements beyond base salary, such as spousal and post-parliament benefits for former MPs, deserve review or removal.
The backlash has renewed public calls to reform the PEC to address the conflict of interest inherent in MPs having a hand in setting their own pay, with many framing the debate as a test of whether leadership means sharing hardship or being insulated from it.
