A farmer in West Kwaio, Malaita province is appealing to the government to focus on agricultural farmers in rural communities.

Moses Bogilogilo made the appeal saying he has seen many existing agricultural farmers struggling by themselves and contributing to the economy through commodities.

He said the government’s support should prioritise cocoa, coconut, and piggery farmers in the rural communities.

He mentioned that while focusing on new farmers may be helpful, it should be balanced with support for the existing farmers.

“The existing farmers are more experienced and know well the failures and efforts needed for success, so the government should support them.

“We have many existing farmers in our rural communities that need support, but their voices for support aren’t heard,” he said.

He calls on the Ministry of Agriculture and Livestock to be transparent and accountable in selecting genuine farmers for future projects.

“I just want to call on the ministry to be transparent and accountable when selecting project recipients. This is the way forward so that genuine and hardworking farmers can be selected,” he said.
