The Solomon Islands Chess Federation officially introduced experienced chess official Chris Kaitu’u as Chief Arbiter for its upcoming Chess Tournament 2026 set for this Sunday at Outback Holiday Resort in Rove.
The announcement was made through the federation’s official social media platform as final preparations continue ahead of the much-anticipated competition.
According to the federation, Kaitu’u currently serves as Vice President of the Solomon Islands Chess Federation and is among the country’s experienced senior chess figures.
The federation also acknowledged his international exposure after representing Solomon Islands at the 2014 Chess Olympiad.
In its official post, the federation stated that Kaitu’u’s experience and leadership qualities will play an important role in ensuring the smooth running of the tournament.
“With his experience, leadership, and passion for the game, we are confident he will ensure fair play, discipline, and professionalism throughout the tournament,” the federation stated.
At the same time, the federation also confirmed the introduction of official player and observer passes for the tournament.
Organisers stated that all registered participants who complete their registration and pay the SBD20 fee will receive official tournament identification passes.
The passes will include Player Passes for registered competitors and Observer Passes for supporters and spectators attending the event.
The federation advises that participants and supporters wear their passes throughout the tournament for identification and access purposes.
“All participants are advised that after completing your registration and paying the $20 registration fee, you will receive your official Tournament Pass,” another federation post stated.
Officials also said that all passes must be returned after the tournament concludes.
The upcoming competition will be played under a rapid 20-minute format with eight rounds scheduled for the day, while the featured Challenge Match between Junior Lui and Fred R is also expected to attract strong public interest.
Island Sun previously reported that the tournament venue was recently shifted from White River School to Outback Holiday Resort as organisers intensified preparations for Sunday’s event.
The tournament also marks the federation’s first major chess competition for 2026 as officials continue efforts to strengthen competitive chess and increase participation in the sport across Solomon Islands.
