The World Association of Basketball Coaches and FIBA Level One Coaching Course will conclude tomorrow at the Solomon Islands National Institute of Sport (SINIS).

The weeklong program forms part of ongoing efforts to strengthen basketball coaching standards, equipping participants with essential skills and knowledge to develop the game at grassroots, national and international levels.

This is the second time the course has been delivered in the region, with Fiji previously hosting the FIBA-certified program before the COVID-19 pandemic.

A statement from SINIS described the training as a significant boost for coaching development in the country and across the Pacific, with local coaches stepping up to attain their WABC Level One certification.

“This training is made possible through the support of the National Olympic Committee of Solomon Islands and the International Olympic Committee Technical Coaches Grant, ensuring our coaches have access to world-class development opportunities,” the statement said.

The six-day course aims to enhance coaching standards by combining theoretical knowledge with practical skills, while also strengthening collaboration among coaches in the region.

“Day one of the FIBA WABC Level One Coaching Course at SINIS began with a theory session in the conference room, setting the foundation for coaching development across the Pacific,” the statement added.

Lead facilitator Caleb Harrison said the program is designed to improve the quality of coaching at an international level.

Participant Laora said her passion for basketball and desire to grow as a coach motivated her to take part.

“I am hoping to gain a better understanding of basic basketball skills and how to teach them effectively,” she said.

She said the fundamentals and teaching methods session stood out most, highlighting the importance of creating a fun and engaging learning environment, particularly for young and developing players.

According to the Solomon Islands Basketball Association, the course included practical assessments over the weekend, where participants were evaluated on their ability to deliver coaching sessions.

Certificates of participation will be presented tomorrow, while official FIBA certificates will be awarded at a later date.

SINIS also acknowledges Australia’s continued support for the Regional Coaches Program in Solomon Islands.
