ENSO conditions remain neutral, El NiƱo likely to develop

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) says the tropical Pacific Ocean is currently in an ENSO-neutral state, meaning neither El NiƱo nor La NiƱa conditions are present.

In its latest El NiƱo–Southern Oscillation (ENSO) update issued on 24 April 2026, SIMS said sea surface temperatures across the central Pacific remain near average, although warmer waters below the surface are developing.

ā€œInternational climate models now indicate that El NiƱo conditions are likely to develop between May and July 2026 and could persist through the end of the year. However, forecasters note that some uncertainty remains, although confidence is increasing in a transition toward El NiƱo,ā€ the statement said.

If El NiƱo conditions develop, SIMS warns Solomon Islands could experience below-normal rainfall in the coming months, with a higher risk of dry spells and possible drought conditions later in the year.

The update also highlights the likelihood of warmer daytime temperatures and the need for close monitoring of water resources, agriculture, and fire risk.

SIMS said it will continue to monitor ENSO developments closely and provide regular updates, including seasonal outlooks and weather advisories.

Members of the public are encouraged to stay informed and follow official updates from the Solomon Islands Meteorological Service.
