Strong wind warning number 36

Rough seas and strong winds are battering most of Solomon Islands’ waters, and authorities are urging people – especially those planning to travel by sea – to think twice before heading out.

The Solomon Islands Meteorological Service (SIMS) issued Strong Wind Warning Number 36 at 7am yesterday, Tuesday 23 June 2026, warning that southeasterly winds are expected “to reach 20 to 25 knots over most waters of Solomon Islands”.

Seas are forecasted to be “moderate to rough, with southeasterly swells” of between 2.5 to 3 metres, and poor visibility is expected in shower and thunderstorm areas.

Small boat operators are being specifically warned, with SIMS cautioning that “such winds can produce dangerous wave conditions which are hazardous to small boats”.

Coastal and exposed communities are also being asked to act now.

“People in those areas should take precautionary measures as such strong winds have the potential to impact lives and properties,” the warning said.

Community members are also asked to share the warning with people with disabilities to ensure no one is left uninformed.
