Solomon Islands rich in resources but many left behind: PM Wale

Prime Minister Matthew Wale says Solomon Islands is abundantly blessed with natural resources and a resilient population, but acknowledged that many citizens are yet to benefit fully from the country’s development.

Launching the GREAT (Government for Reform, Empowerment, Accountability & Transparency) Coalition Government’s policy statement recently, Mr Wale said the country possesses fertile land, vast forests, rich fisheries, valuable mineral resources and a unique cultural heritage that place it in a strong position for future growth.

“Our nation has been abundantly blessed.

“We stand at the crossroads of the Pacific in a region of growing strategic importance. Above all, we are blessed with a resilient and youthful population whose talent, determination and aspirations give us every reason to look to the future with confidence,” Mr Wale said.

However, the Prime Minister said the country’s natural wealth has not translated into broad-based prosperity for many Solomon Islanders.

He said too many young people continue to struggle to find meaningful employment, while many rural communities still lack essential infrastructure and basic services.

Mr Wale also said much of the wealth generated from the country’s natural resources has left Solomon Islands without creating lasting opportunities for its people.

He acknowledged that public institutions have often been expected to deliver results without the coordination, capacity and resources needed to perform effectively.

“These realities are not a reflection of the character, resilience or ability of our people.

“Rather, they remind us that government must continually strengthen its institutions, improve its policies and adapt to the changing needs and aspirations of the nation,” he said.

Mr Wale said the GREAT Coalition Government recognises the contributions made by previous governments, stressing that nation-building is a continuous effort that spans generations.

He said while past administrations have each contributed to the country’s development, the current government has a responsibility to address today’s challenges by strengthening successful policies, reforming areas that have not worked and preparing Solomon Islands for future opportunities.

The Prime Minister said the government’s vision extends beyond economic growth alone.

He said Solomon Islands must become a stronger, fairer and more confident nation where government is accountable to its people, justice is upheld, businesses are given fair opportunities, natural resources are managed responsibly, all provinces benefit from national development and every child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.

Mr Wale said these principles form the foundation of the GREAT Coalition Government’s policy agenda and its commitment to deliver inclusive and sustainable development for all Solomon Islanders.
