The Malaita Provincial Government executive has agreed to move the province’s Second Appointed Day celebrations to November 18.
Malaita’s 2nd appointed day falls on August 15.
The decision to move the celebration was due to resolutions made by the Executive on May 18, which was approved by Minister of Provincial Government and Institutional Strengthening, Lazarus Rina.
A statement from the Malaita Provincial Government said the setting of the new date was decided with several key considerations.
Moving the Second Appointed Day Celebration to the new date will provide an important opportunity to align the celebrations with the completion of key infrastructure developments in the province; marking a significant milestone for the province.
“The Malaita Provincial Government wishes to formally inform families, communities, wards, 14 constituencies in Malaita, Honiara-based Malaitans, friends of Malaita, Malaitans living in other provinces, all ministries, development partners, and Malaitans living abroad that the 43rd Second Appointed Day Celebrations, originally scheduled for 15 August 2026, has been deferred to 18 November 2026.
“The Second Appointed Day remains a vital occasion for strengthening provincial identity and unity while also promoting development, investment, and tourism in Malaita,” the statement said.
It was noted that the key considerations for the executive decision of deferment included:
– Ongoing infrastructure rehabilitation and improvement.
– Financial constraints that are still affecting and challenging for organizations and the implementation of the event.
– Public awareness gaps that need to be addressed regarding the event.
The Malaita Provincial Government appreciates the understanding and continued support of all stakeholders and the people of Malaita Province.
