A total of 184 probation nurses have officially become registered nurses after successfully completing the Supervised Practice Program (SPP), marking a significant milestone for the country’s health workforce.

The induction and commissioning ceremony was held last Friday, June 26, with an opening service at Kukum Seventh-day Adventist Church followed by a commissioning ceremony at St Barnabas Cathedral Hall.

Minister for Health and Medical Services (MHMS), Morris To’iraena, who attended as the guest of honour, congratulated the newly registered nurses on their achievement and encouraged them to uphold the highest standards of professionalism.

He said the ministry remains committed to strengthen nursing services and support the professional development of nurses across Solomon Islands.

During the ceremony, the graduates received their certificates, badges and garlands before taking part in a candle-lighting ceremony symbolising their commitment to caring for patients and serving the nation.

Speaking to Island Sun, Acting National Director of Nursing, Japhet Honimae, congratulated the new registered nurses and reminded them that the transition marks the beginning of greater responsibilities.

“Being a nurse is all about compassion. They should have compassion and be prepared to serve whenever they are called upon. We are dealing with essential services, so they must maintain a high standard of professional performance,” Mr Honimae said.

One of the newly registered nurses, Erisole Karika, described the occasion as a proud and emotional achievement after four years of hard work.

“I am so happy because it took me four years to become a registered nurse. Despite the struggles, I finally achieved my goal. I am also the first person in my family to graduate, so this is a very special moment for me,” she said.

The 184 newly registered nurses are now qualified to serve in hospitals, clinics, private health facilities and communities throughout Solomon Islands and abroad, strengthening the country’s healthcare workforce.
