The ARO Outrigger & Canoe Club is preparing to host its Pentecost Sprints Regatta 2026 later this month, promising an action-packed day of paddling competition, community spirit and family entertainment at DC Park, Iumi Water Sports Park.
Set for May 25, the regatta will feature V1 sprint races over 250 metres and 500 metres, along with a 3-kilometre mixed relay event expected to test both speed and endurance on the water.
According to information shared by the club on its official Facebook page, paddlers from the Junior 19, Open and Masters divisions are invited to compete in the individual sprint races, while teams of three — including at least one female paddler — will contest the mixed relay category.
The club said registrations for the event officially opened this week and will close on May 18.
“With cash prizes up for grabs across all events, spectators and competitors can expect a vibrant day filled with competitive racing, community spirit, food stalls, music, and family-friendly fun,” the club stated.
The event will also include safety boats, race briefings and first aid services to ensure competitors’ safety throughout the regatta.
Apart from the on-water action, the club is also running a fundraising raffle draw in support of its activities and future development plans. The raffle features several prizes including sporting equipment, vouchers and beverages, with tickets selling for $10 each.
The regatta comes as outrigger canoeing continues to grow in popularity among young people and community paddlers in Honiara and surrounding areas.
Meanwhile, the club recently farewelled one of its long-serving paddlers, Bec Williams, who is relocating to New Zealand.
In a heartfelt social media tribute, the club described her as “one of the originals who helped shape the culture and spirit of ARO into what it is today.”
The post highlighted her commitment to the club through early morning training sessions and long-distance paddling journeys to Savo and Tulagi over the years.
ARO Outrigger & Canoe Club is one of the emerging paddling clubs in Honiara and has continued promoting outrigger canoeing through community events, training activities and local regattas aimed at developing the sport in Solomon Islands.
