MAJOR road upgrade works in Gizo are expected to begin in July 2026 under a multi-million-dollar infrastructure program that aims to improve roads and drainage systems across the township.
In an interview with Island Sun last week, Minister of Works for Western Province, Freedom Tozaka said the road development initiative will be carried out in three phases and funded through different government-supported programs.
“Under the first phase, the CAUSE Project will upgrade roads from the MSG area to the BSP junction,” he said.
Tozaka said the project will include tar-sealed and cemented roads as well as drainage systems from Gizo Hotel to BSP and from PT109 to Gizo Hotel.
He said the second phase will be funded through the Provincial Capacity Development Fund (PCDF), covering the stretch from Cornershop to the Babylon area.
Tozaka said the project will also include drainage works and is estimated to cost around $1.5 million.
He said the third phase will be funded by the Ministry of Infrastructure Development (MID) with a budget allocation of $2 million.
“This component will cover road upgrades from the BSP area to KHY and extending to Saeragi,” Tozaka said.
He said the projects will undergo a public tender process to determine qualified construction companies to carry out the works.
Tozaka said the PCDF-funded road project is already in the tender process, while the CAUSE Project is expected to go out for tender next month.
He said the road upgrades are expected to significantly improve transportation within Gizo and address long-standing drainage issues that often affect motorists and pedestrians during heavy rain.
