THE Solomon Islands national futsal team, the Kurukurus has kicked off their campaign with a bang at the 5th Asian indoors and Martial Arts Games in Asgabat, Turkmenistan.

Kurukurus defeated Chinese Hong Kong 4-1 in their first match of the competition 1am local time yesterday.

Marhlon Sia, Coleman Makau and Alvin Hou were on target for the boys as they secured a morale boosting win over Hong Kong.

Head Coach Jerry Sam was pleased with the win and his boy’s performance but stresses they will need to keep their focus for their remaining pool matches.

“Not really but I want to thank the boys for the fight last night against one of the great teams in Asia,” Coach Sam told Sun SPORTS yesterday.

“I think generally the boys played their heart for the country and they stick to our game plan really well. This only first game and now we keep our focus for the next game,” he said.

Kurukurus will play Chinese Taipei in their next match today then will take on the hosts Turkmenistan Tuesday next week and meets Vietnam in their final pool match on Wednesday.

Meanwhile support for the Kurukurus is beginning to stir again in the country following that victory. Social media users took to Face Book to show support for the boys and send their wishes and good luck for their remaining matches.
