Unions keen to become part of SOEs

By Mike Puia

UNIONS across the country have shared their “keen” interest to become part of State Owned Enterprises (SOEs) boards.

The Solomon Islands Public Employees Union (SIPEU) has also indicated its interest.

SIPEU’s General Secretary, Mr Robert Au, said in the past their Union is represented in a number of SOEs.

Au said this has not been the case at present.

Unions are registered under the Registrar General’s office, which looks after the Trades Union Act.

Au said it could be that becoming a member in an SOE is selected based on qualification or merit.

“The question is, are those selected represented workers in the public and private sector,” Au asks.

He said Unions should have a say in our SOEs on behave of its members.

“We, the unions, are very keen to represent members in our SOEs,” Au added.
