IN the Cabinet house yesterday, Prime Minister Manasseh Sogavare announced that diplomatic and bilateral cooperation between Solomon Islands and ROC (Taiwan) has been elevated to greater heights this year.

Sogavare made the statement on behalf of his government during President Tsai Ing-wen and her ministers’ visit to Cabinet.

“We are proud that our connection has bridged our Governments, our private sector and our peoples in both countries.

“This year, our Countries extended our partnership in signing of an MOU on Meteorology, Air Services Agreement, an MOU between our two International Ports in Honiara and Kaohsiung, and today we are prepared to sign MOU on Police Cooperation.

“Madam President, Solomon Islands as your good friend and partner will continue to cherish our diplomatic relations, and further collaborate with your country to progress development, peace, human rights and the rule of law as we endeavour on into the future.”

Sogavare assures President Tsai and her officials that Solomon Islands will continue to stand with the Republic of China (Taiwan) and support at the UN and its subsidiary bodies.

“We will further continue to support your work in the pacific region through our regional organizations and through your other engagements with our Pacific friends.”

In addition to Taiwan’s goodwill, Sogavare said Solomon Islands this year also witnessed a goodwill naval visit by the Republic of China Navy in April.

He said the visit enhanced people to people diplomacy and cultural understanding between the two countries through cultural performances staged by the Navy.

Further in June, the Government and people of Solomon Islands were honoured to host the Foreign Minister of the Republic of China (Taiwan), his Excellency, Dr David Tawei Lee.

“Your Excellency, your country has always been a dear friend to us; you have stood with us in our times of needs including in our darkest moments in history and continue to stand by us,” Sogavare said.
