Literacy reduces poverty: PS Rodie

BY MAVIS NISHIMURA PODOKOLO

PERMANENT Secretary for Ministry of Education Human Resources Development (MEHRD) Dr Franco Rodie reveals literacy is one way to reduce poverty.

He said there have been many reasons why global leaders including Solomon Islands pioneers have advocated for literacy.

He highlighted reducing poverty and enabling people to find job, “besides the above outcome of advocating for literacy it was also said to be one of the most efficient ways of improving the health of mothers and children, understanding doctors prescriptions and gaining access to healthcare”.

He said according to the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) Literacy facilitates access to knowledge and triggers a process of empowerment and self esteem that benefits every one.

Rodie emphasised that ensuring every child to go through the education system to learn to read, write and speak should be all Solomon Islanders’ aim.

“It should be our aim to ensure that every child that goes through our education system must learn to read, write and speak in English and to use information for his/her own advantage,” he said.
